In light of the famines in four African nations recently, a SciDevNet blog post describes how water is the key to ending the chronic cycle of huger and malnutrition. Currently, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan and Yemen are in the middle of the famine. The article argues that apart from better water infrastructure, there is need to build capacity for water harvesting and conservation across the continent. Further, the author also says that the government should take a long term view to disaster management and learn from the efforts of countries such as Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand, that have made progress and are working on pilot projects that capture, harvest and store flood water.
