IFPRI’s Regional Strategic Analysis and Knowledge Support System in Asia (ReSAKSS-Asia), provided a six-day training workshop on advanced economy-wide modeling. This training was offered in collaboration with researchers from the Eurasian Center for Food Security (ECFS). Housed at Lomonosov Moscow State University, ECFS aims to enhance agricultural performance in the region through sustainable rural development and natural resource management. Course materials focused on the application and practical use of the International Model for Policy Analysis of Agricultural Commodities and Trade (IMPACT). The IMPACT model was designed to provide a basis for research examining the linkages between commodity production and food demand and security. Using the model, policy analysis can be conducted at the national level in the context of various future climate scenarios. Topics covered during the training included an introduction to the IMPACT model and its methodology, the development and analysis of climate and technology adoption scenarios, and welfare analysis.
Prior to the training, there had been a strong demand from local policymakers and researchers for technical assistance to improve their understanding of the impacts of climate change on food security across the region. By strengthening their technical capacity for policy analysis, participants are able to effectively support IFPRI’s further modeling work in the Central Asia region.
