Suresh Babu (Senior Research Fellow, IFPRI) presented an on- line lecture on “Global Food Security: COVID -19 and Beyond“ on January 26, 2021 to a class of 24 students (15 females, 9 males) at the University of Maryland, College Park. This lecture was part of a course on ‘International Crop Issues and Challenges in the 21st Century’ offered by Environmental Science and Technology (ENST) Department. It is taught to senior level students from multidisciplinary backgrounds. IFPRI staff presents recent developments in food policy research as part of this course every year. A Social Entrepreneurship approach to learning is used as a teaching method for this course. Each student selects a developing country, studies the food security situation, and comes up with solutions based on various issues discussed in the class. Students present their findings at the end of the semester to the whole class for evaluation by peers and submit country reports for grading. This approach was first developed by Per Pinstrup-Andersen, former DG of IFPRI at Cornell University using Cornell Food Policy Case Studies and is now followed in selected capacity development activities and projects implemented by IFPRI.
