Ruth Meinzen-Dick conducted a training on ‘Gender, Climate Change and Land Rights: Understanding the Data and Evidence in South Asia’. This training was part of a session on Ownership, Access, Preservation: A Lack of Environmental Rights Hurt Women for the 2021 Women’s Edition journalist training webinar focusing on the ‘The Roots of Inequity: How Environmental ‘Injustice and Climate Crisis Increase Gender-Based Violence’ organized by the Population Reference Bureau based in Washington, DC. The training participants were women journalists from South Asia working in media outlets or as independent journalists. The total number of participants were 20. The aim of the training was to discuss gender issues in South Asia in the context of climate change and land rights. Specifically, the training provided an overview on how restricted land rights affect violence and poverty for women. It also discussed data sources , research, and evidence around land ownership and gender and highlighted some key security issues arising due to restricted access to public land. The training also provided information on relevant data sources and research studies on the key gender issues in the region. With this training, journalists will now be better equipped to understand, analyze, and report on complex gender related issues in the South Asian region.
