As part of Rwanda Strategy Support Program, David Spielman, Gracie Rosenbach, and Gilberthe Benimana conducted a training on ‘Price Dynamics for Agriculture and Nutrition Policy Using Stata to explore and utilize e-Soko market price data’. Market price dynamics play a critical role in the agriculture and nutrition sectors. In this learning event, participants learnt how to make effective use of market price data from e-Soko and other sources to compare and interpret prices of various food items across different markets over time. E-Soko is an expansive database managed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) that covers 66 markets across all 30 districts of Rwanda. Price data are collected nearly every day for approximately 90 items – including food items, agricultural inputs, cooking inputs, and live animals. The e-soko is currently revamping/upgrading (to ‘e-soko plus’). And so one key outcome of this event was to have participants interact with the current e-soko platform and provide valuable feedback to the team working on the upgrade. This training was perceived to be incredibly valuable by the participants. All of the participants currently use, or would like to use, market price data in their day-to-day work, but before this training they lacked the knowledge and experience on how to do so. Now, they have this training and a lot of resources at their disposal to inform their work. The learning event had 11 male and 5 female participants.
