IFPRI staff conducted several capacity strengthening activities in 2019. Below is a brief description of these activities:
- Noora-Lisa Aberman, Wim Marivoet, Aulo Geli, Lucy Billings conducted a Voices for Change Partnership Capacity Development Workshop in March 2019. The training had 18 male and 7 female participants. For more information, click here.
- Karl Pauw, Sena Amewu, Seth Asante in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) Ghana, organized a two-day training workshop on agricultural commodity market price analysis, focusing on price transmission effects and seasonality in February 2019. The training serves as a capacity building platform for relevant stakeholders especially MoFA staff towards effective monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of the country’s flagship agriculture sector intervention program dubbed Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ). Participants at the workshop included staff from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Ghana Grains Council (GGC), Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX), Statistical Research and Information Department (SRID) of MoFA, Policy Planning Monitoring and Evaluation Department (PPMED) of MoFA and one PhD student from the University of Ghana. - Karl Pauw, Noora-Lisa Aberman organized an executive-level government capacity building program for FAO’s Strategic Program “Reduce Rural Poverty” as part of its efforts to effectively support countries in achieving the SDGs by adopting multi-sectoral approaches to poverty reduction, emphasizing the interdependence and linkages between poverty, food security and nutrition between November 2019. The course was completed by 20 male and 3 female government officials from various Ministries in Zambia and Ghana. For more information, click here.
- Noora-Lisa Aberman; Karl Pauw collaborated with FAO to develop an executive course for senior level Ghanaian and Zambian officials to strengthening the use of poverty analysis to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 (“no poverty”) and 2 (“zero hunger”) between November and December 2019. - Noora-Lisa Aberman, Wim Marivoet, Lucy Billings presented on "Leveraging food systems for improved diets" at the SNV V4CP Capacity Development Workshop in March 2019. The workshop had 19 male and 6 female participants. For more information, click here.
- Namukolo Covic, Roos Verstraeten, Stuart Gillespie conducted Transform Nutrition West Africa (TNWA) Project Short Course on Evidence for Policy and Programming in March 2019. The course focused on creating an awareness of the latest evidence on nutrition globally, and relating this to the West African context, leveraging the experience of the participants. As part of the training, participants compiled an evidence base to help inform transformational change in nutrition for their countries, or regionally for participants who worked at the West African regional level. - Vivian Hoffmann conducted concurrent seminars (linked by WebEx) targeting policymakers and other stakeholders in Nairobi, Kenya and Accra, Ghana in November 2019. The seminar had 21 male and 11 female participants. For more information, click here.
- Mike Murphy conducted CAgE Project Field Experiment: Enumerator Training on protocols and script for framed field experiment with IPA enumerators in March 2019. The training had 25 male and 25 female participants. For more information, click here.
- Judith Chambers conducted numerous training events for BioRAPP and PBS. For BioRAPP - training on the use of DREAMpy for developing country economists from 5 countries andPBS - training events on communications, legal analysis, gene editing regulatory decision making, food/feed safety risk assessment. These trainings happened throughout 2019. For more information, click here.
- Catherine Ragasa, Sena Amewu in collaboration with the Water Research Institute organized training for enumerators from the local survey firm (FMMS) in May 2019. Preliminary activities of the training involved a one-day field visit to the Aquaculture Research and Development Center in Akosombo to educate enumerators on aquaculture practices. The training had 15 male and 6 female participants. For more information, click here.
- Catherine Ragasa, Sena Amewu conducted Tilapia Seed Project stakeholder workshops in Kumasi and Akosombo in September 2019. The workshop focus on the presentation of preliminary findings from the baseline survey of small and medium scale aquaculture farms in the project regions as well as validation of preliminary results. Stakeholders included farmers, project partners and other key players in the aquaculture sector. The training had 59 male and 9 female participants. For more information, click here.
- Seth Asante, Kwaw Andam conducted Enumerator Training and pretest of survey instrument on input dealer survey: This involved the introduction of enumerators to the survey in June 2019. The enumerators were training on using both paper and CAPI versions of the questionnaire. The training had 7 male participants. For more information, click here.
- Seth Asante, Kwaw Andam presented an overview on the fertilizer quality assessment study and observed training of regional Plant Protection And Regulatory Services Directorate (PPRSD) officers in conducting sampling of fertilizer samples and going through the plant and fertilizer Act in July 2019.
