Rowena Valmonte-Santos and Mark Rosegrant conducted an in person capacity strengthening training for graduate students of the Global Agriculture Leadership Academy in Texas State University, San Marcos, in March 2023. This training was part of a project on Texas State University’s Global AgLeader: Development of Leadership and Global Competency to Enhance Recruitment and Retention of Minority Students which aims to increase recruitment and retention of minority baccalaureate and graduate students in agriculture through innovative programs that emphasize career awareness, leadership development and global competency among agriculture students. The training included a series of lectures which enhanced students’ knowledge of various agriculture sector related topics including collective action, use of games to manage common pool resources, water and food security, agricultural biotechnology, and impacts of climate on food security with plans on applying one of these topics for their PhD dissertation. There were 6 male and 2 female participants. It is envisioned that given the wide range of lecture topics presented to the students, their interests to remain in the Department of Agriculture and work along the agriculture sector will be reinforced.
