Under CACCI-Asia, a consultative stakeholder workshop 'Multisectoral Climate Action: Designing and Implementing Context Specific Interventions for Achieving NDCs and NAPs' was conducted in Tamil Nadu, India for local level stakeholders on June 5-6, 2023. The workshop was co-organized by the Panchayat Academy, Chennai, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, and IFPRI.
Several knowledge and skill gaps for implementing climate action were identified with respect to methane emission reduction interventions: i) While rice related alternate wetting and drying (AWD) and direct-seeded rice (DSR) technologies exist, programmatic action focused on ground level implementation is weak; ii) Although India’s NDC emphasizes on GHG emission reduction, there are currently limited action plans or investment priorities identified at the state and local levels for methane emission reduction. It was recommended that given that Tamil Nadu is a major rice producing state and the rice crop is a major methane emitter, stakeholders should work with Panchayat leaders on developing annual agriculture plans to incorporate climate resiliency through methane emission reduction as a major strategy. The outcomes of the discussions have helped in the development of pilot stage interventions for an upcoming project 'Agriculture' which will be funded the Global Methane Hub.
