The Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning and Development of the Government of the Republic of Malawi requested for a capacity strengthening workshop aimed at timely responding to policy and investment needs in the areas of agriculture, tourism, and mining. Specifically they sought to be equipped to examine and quantify how investing in activities that directly impact food security, through inorganic and organic fertilizer inputs, could affect availability of foreign exchange, access to fossil fuels and energy resources, and eventually spill over to broader economic outcomes of growth, employment and dietary outcomes.
Henry Kankwamba, Karl Pauw, James Thurlow, Joachim De Weerdt, and Cynthia Kazembe organized a Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) multiplier modeling workshop in Jan 2024. There were 8 male and 2 female participants. It focused on strengthening the capacity to conduct policy and investment analysis using the SAM multiplier. The training had a real impact because participants are using the skills obtained to address policy relevant questions at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development. Another workshop was organized on ‘Scenario design in SAM multiplier analysis: The ex-ante impact of a targeted subsidy reform’ in March 2024 and had 7 male and 3 female participants. It covered topics on baseline assumptions for SAM multiplier analysis, data preparation, and reporting. For more information, click here.
